Seeking Wisdom

The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skillful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]! And with all your acquiring, get understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation]. (Proverbs 4:7, AMP)

The last couple of days we (in Florida), have experienced the wrath of tropical storm Debby.  It has rained and rained and rained, often with no end in sight.  This has made me think, how nice it would be if wisdom could come to me through the rain.  I would love to go outside and drench myself in the wisdom of God.  I would love it, if it just poured down and took little effort on my part to obtain…  But as I study the Scriptures I see that wisdom is sought, it’s something I have to ask for, something I have to go and get!  Here are the Proverbs that lead me to that conclusion!

Pruning Time

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.  He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. (John 15:1-2)

Lord, please prune any part of me that is not bearing fruit for You.  May the transforming life of Christ pulsate through my very being as I cling to the nutrients found in the Source of life.

Reflecting the King

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it— HE WILL BE BLESSED IN WHAT HE DOES. (James 1:22-25)

We were watching a movie last night on tv with some friends called “Deck the Halls”.  The movie came out in 2006 and really is quite funny.  But even more than that, there is a reality behind it that leads me to the sad truth in most people on this earth.  The two main characters in this story are trying to find their identity in this world.  They want to be seen by people around them.  The goal of the neighbor who has just moved in is to be seen on Google earth, to be seen from space.  Isn’t that the goal of most people we meet in life?

Time to Refuel

I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing. (John 15:5, AMP)

This last week I realized that I was running on empty.  I had somehow managed to get to a place where there was nothing left but fumes.  It’s my fault.  I didn’t stop as often as I should have to spend time with the Lord during my trip home to be with my Dad.  Yes, I had moments here and there with the Lord.  But nothing like what I have when I’m home.  I carve out the time.  I make the effort.  I don’t let a day go by without some really good time in the Word.  But somehow when life gets crazy, when the storms hit, and chaos breaks forth.  My time seems to escape me.  I go through a day just happy to survive.  Happy to have one more day!

Declaring God’s Faithfulness

For the Lord Most High is to be feared [and worshiped with awe-inspired reverence and obedience]; He is a great King over all the earth. (Psalm 47:2, AMP)

This week has been somewhat crazy for me, so I have not been able to get out the kind of devotionals I was planning on. Normally, I do a lot of studying before I write a single devotional. And I do my best to get all the devotionals done at least a week in advance. Well, life has done what it sometimes does. It’s turned my world upside down. It’s all good! God continues to be extremely faithful to me. In fact, I hope to write about this week’s events in an upcoming series.
