Hunger for the Lord

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

This is one of my favorite verses from the sermon on the mount.  It speaks to the truth inside all of us.  We all hunger for something beyond what anything in this world can satisfy.  At times we might try to satisfy that hunger with temporary things or people, but eventually we come to realize that God is the only One who can fully satisfy the hunger within us.

The Bread of Life

Do you know that Jesus is the source of life?  He is the sustainer of your well-being.  He has provided all that you need to enjoy a relationship with God.  He came to be the Bread of Life, the Living Water for your soul, and the Light that shines in your darkness.  He can and will nourish you, He will quench your thirsty soul, and He will light your path.  Let’s see how He does this!

1.  Bread of Life

If you take time to read John 6, you will find the context for this verse.  Jesus had just finished feeding the 5,000 with five small barley loaves and two small fish.  Jesus performed a splendid miracle right before their eyes, but they missed the relevance of it.  They were happy to be satisfied by the food and thankful that the Lord provided it.  But they missed the meaning of it.  Later, they came to Jesus for more.  They wanted more of what the Lord had to offer.  Jesus told them quite simply that the food of this world will spoil, but the food that He gives will endure forever.  Jesus is the sustenance of your life.  He wants to fill you up with the Word of God, so that you may feast on all that is good and righteous.  Have you gotten your fill of God’s Word today?  Are you nourished by the Bread of Life?  Have you tasted and seen that the Lord is good?  “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”  ~Psalm 34:8

Then Jesus declared, “I am the Bread of Life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”  ~John 6:35
