Source of Life

I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.  John 15:5 (AMP)

Let’s look at who Jesus is and what His life offers for us.  Please take time to read John 15:1-17.  This will give you a better understanding of Jesus and His character as the True Vine.

This passage is fairly easy to understand…  We have life flowing through us when we stay attached to the True Vine.  It’s amazing how much life can flow through me when I’m attached to the Word and all that God says.  But the moment, I disconnect… the moment I disengage… death starts to creep in.  Okay, maybe not literally.  But Satan starts to hit with anxiety, condemning thoughts, frustration, irritation, anger, selfishness, and so much more.  My mouth tends to say too much when I’m not daily renewed by God’s Word.  Yes, it gets pretty ugly.  This is why I have to keep going back to the Word.  The Word is my life source.  It is what breathes goodness into me.

The Good Shepherd

Do you know that there are over 100 names and titles for Jesus in the Bible?  Do you fully grasp all that Jesus came to be for you?  Let’s take a look at His many attributes and the names that describe Him.  I pray you find comfort in the One who came to die for you.

1.  Jesus is a Shepherd

Jesus came to care for the lost sheep.  That’s you and I.  He came to be the Shepherd, the One to guide us gently back into the flock.  He will never force you to be a part of the flock of sheep.  But I promise you, the only place you are safe is under His care.

“I am the Good Shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me– just as the Father knows me and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep.”  ~John 10:14-15

The Bread of Life

Do you know that Jesus is the source of life?  He is the sustainer of your well-being.  He has provided all that you need to enjoy a relationship with God.  He came to be the Bread of Life, the Living Water for your soul, and the Light that shines in your darkness.  He can and will nourish you, He will quench your thirsty soul, and He will light your path.  Let’s see how He does this!

1.  Bread of Life

If you take time to read John 6, you will find the context for this verse.  Jesus had just finished feeding the 5,000 with five small barley loaves and two small fish.  Jesus performed a splendid miracle right before their eyes, but they missed the relevance of it.  They were happy to be satisfied by the food and thankful that the Lord provided it.  But they missed the meaning of it.  Later, they came to Jesus for more.  They wanted more of what the Lord had to offer.  Jesus told them quite simply that the food of this world will spoil, but the food that He gives will endure forever.  Jesus is the sustenance of your life.  He wants to fill you up with the Word of God, so that you may feast on all that is good and righteous.  Have you gotten your fill of God’s Word today?  Are you nourished by the Bread of Life?  Have you tasted and seen that the Lord is good?  “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”  ~Psalm 34:8

Then Jesus declared, “I am the Bread of Life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”  ~John 6:35

Soaking Up God’s Goodness

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (John 7:37-38)

Every time I read Scripture, I want to absorb as much as possible.  My desire is to soak up all God’s goodness, His faithfulness, His mercy, His love, and so much more.  I want to soak it up, so that when people squeeze me… The goodness of God comes out.  I pray that I will become a living sponge for the things of God.
