Hit a Home Run

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:1)

I know I’m a running a little late to celebrate the World Series, but it’s never too late to use a Baseball analogy.  Especially knowing that baseball is one of America’s favorite pass times.  It’s the place we sing, “Take me out to the Ball Game…”  We ask for peanuts, we cheer with the crowd for our favorite team, we do the wave in the stands, we love the hot dogs, and we just enjoy the game!  Well, what if we lived our life for God like we go out and watch a Baseball game.  What if we went out to celebrate the game?  What if we even got involved in the game?  Maybe it’s time to go hit a home run for Jesus!

My Pocket God

…How long will you waver between two opinions?  If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him. (1 Kings 18:21)

How many of you know someone who is wavering between the One true God and a god of this world?  I happen to know quite a few and I love each opportunity I have to share the Truth of who the real God is.  There is only One who can save those who are dying daily.  There is only One who can stand the test of time and only One who does not demand our good deeds to make it to Heaven.  God Almighty is the only One who is living and active in our lives.  We pray to someone who lives today, who lived long before us, and whose presence we will still enjoy when we leave this earth.  There is no other religion that can claim a Living God, who sent a living sacrifice for our sins.

The True Genius Bar

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. (Psalm 68:19)

Have you ever felt like you are troubleshooting with your life?  I certainly have.  A troubleshooter is “a person skilled at solving or anticipating problems or difficulties (Webster’s Dictionary).”  And I should be clear that I feel more like the first part of this definition, a person becoming skilled at solving problems.  I can’t anticipate them very often, but they frequently come.  Let me give you some examples just in this last month…  The air conditioner broke down, the refrigerator door wouldn’t shut, the computer stopped working, my phone took a swim, the roof had a leak, and numerous other things have come up.  Each one God has helped Paul and I solve one by one.

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands… (Isaiah 49:16)

A few months ago, I pulled into a gas station to get some gas. My tank was showing me that I was in desperate need of it. Normally, I don’t allow it to get that low, but this time I had been running around for different appointments and it just slipped my mind.

Well, there I am at the pump. I swipe my card as usual, but I’m denied. No, I wasn’t denied because of my card. I was denied because I was at a Sam’s Club Gas station. I was not a member and I did not have a member’s card. I felt pretty silly. I needed to get back in my vehicle and drive away.

Great Gain

But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. (1 Timothy 6:6-7)

“But godliness with contentment is great gain…”

It is only in God that we find true contentment.  He is the One who fills us up and gives us true meaning for life.  There is a huge difference between contentment and happiness.  Happiness is a feeling.  You might feel happy today because everything has gone right and then tomorrow things might change.  That’s why God’s Word says contentment and not happiness.  God wants us to be content in Him because this is not dependent on how we feel.  This is dependent on what we have in God.  We can learn so much from what Paul writes in Philippians.
