Do not let your heart envy sinners [who live godless lives and have no hope of salvation], But [continue to] live in the [reverent, worshipful] fear of the Lord day by day. (Proverbs 23:17, AMP)

Let’s finish this week by looking at the “Fear of the Lord”.  Altogether, this phrase occurs fourteen times in the book of Proverbs.  If something is worth mentioning fourteen times, than my guess is it’s pretty important.  Let’s take a look at some more of Solomon’s thoughts on this.

Holy Reverence

Read Proverbs 1 today!

I have been studying Proverbs and looking forward to the devotionals that will come out this month.  Honestly, as I study the Proverbs I start to think this is a pretty big task.  It’s almost impossible to do an in-depth study of the entire book in just a month.  The Proverbs are filled with nuggets of truth to apply to our lives.  In fact, there are 500 Proverbs.  That’s a lot to study in a month, so I’ve decided I will share with you the main themes in Proverbs.  I will pull out the things that will help us gain understanding and grow in wisdom before the Lord.

Do you know that the word proverb means “to be like”?  The Proverbs are filled with wisdom on how to be like Christ.  How can we have a godly character that stands the test of time?  Each Proverb dives in a bit deeper on this subject.

Solomon’s Credentials

Have you ever wanted to sit down with the wisest man who ever lived?  Have you ever just longed to glean from the wisdom of those who have gone before us?  Do you sometimes long for wisdom in new and unknown territories of life?  I know I have!  So with that in mind, let’s sit down for coffee with Solomon.  Let’s take a look at his writings in the Proverbs and glean from the wisdom that God gave him.  I know if any of you are like me, you tend to want to know who someone is before you decide to go have coffee with them.  So let me give you some insight into Solomon’s life.  Let’s take a look at his credentials and find out why we can glean from his wisdom!

Solomon is the author of most of the Proverbs.  He also wrote Psalm 72 and 127, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.  Solomon was the ruler of Israel from 971-931 B.C.  In 1 Kings 3 we find out how Solomon became the wisest man to walk the earth.  It is here we read that God came to Solomon in a dream and asked this question, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you (1 Kings 3:5).”  Solomon’s answer  was this, “So give your servant a discerning heart to go govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong… (1 Kings 3:9).”  God’s answer to this is quite amazing!
