Wisdom Solomon Proverbs

Solomon’s Credentials

Have you ever wanted to sit down with the wisest man who ever lived?  Have you ever just longed to glean from the wisdom of those who have gone before us?  Do you sometimes long for wisdom in new and unknown territories of life?  I know I have!  So with that in mind, let’s sit down for coffee with Solomon.  Let’s take a look at his writings in the Proverbs and glean from the wisdom that God gave him.  I know if any of you are like me, you tend to want to know who someone is before you decide to go have coffee with them.  So let me give you some insight into Solomon’s life.  Let’s take a look at his credentials and find out why we can glean from his wisdom!

Solomon is the author of most of the Proverbs.  He also wrote Psalm 72 and 127, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.  Solomon was the ruler of Israel from 971-931 B.C.  In 1 Kings 3 we find out how Solomon became the wisest man to walk the earth.  It is here we read that God came to Solomon in a dream and asked this question, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you (1 Kings 3:5).”  Solomon’s answer  was this, “So give your servant a discerning heart to go govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong… (1 Kings 3:9).”  God’s answer to this is quite amazing!

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.  So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked.  I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.” (1 Kings 3:10-12)

This is how Solomon became the wisest man ever!  He simply asked God for wisdom.  In fact, from then on out we see many wise decisions that Solomon made.  We also see some unwise decisions on Solomon’s part, this was in the latter end of his reign.  But fortunately for us, Solomon took time to write the Proverbs while his heart was right before the Lord.  He shared the great wisdom that God gave him.  Do you know that men of all nations and kings of the world went to Solomon for his great wisdom (1 Kings 5:29-34)?  Many people traveled from lands far away to glean from the wisdom of Solomon.  You and I are so fortunate, we do not have to travel…  We don’t have to deal with traffic, expense, or frustration with traveling.  We simply get to read all of Solomon’s wisdom in the Proverbs.  We get to sit down with the wisest man who ever lived and it won’t cost us anything.

Does that make you want to grab that cup of coffee?  Are you ready to dig into the words of Solomon and find wisdom for your life?  Let’s take time to search God’s heart for us and be strengthened by His Word.  I pray that this study will encourage you and uplift you.  May you find yourself renewed in the hope that only God can give!  May you rest in God’s love and the knowledge that He wants to impart His wisdom to you.  So no matter what you’re facing now… whether it be a strained relationship, a family dilemma, a financial strain, direction for the future, peace for the past, healing for your life and so much more.  Come with me, we will find a little of everything in God’s Word!  I promise that we will leave this study together with a little more wisdom in the area we need!

Dear Father God, Please provide Your wisdom for us today!  May we glean from the work that You did in Solomon’s life.  May we be refreshed by all that the Proverbs have to offer us and may we walk out of this study changed.  Lord, please have Your way in our hearts.  Make us a steadfast generation for the things of You!  Help us increase in the knowledge of You and live it out to our fullest potential.

I’m ready for coffee with Solomon, are you?
