A Muzzle on My Mouth

I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.”

But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased.
My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:

“Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.

Holy Spirit Duct Tape

They were unable to trap him in what he said there in public.  And astonished by his answer, they became silent. (Luke 20:26)

Lord, please teach me to respond quickly to others in love.  May I not be trapped by words, but may I recognize the motivation behind them.  Please increase my wisdom that I may respond wisely to others.  I pray that my heart will be flooded with Your joy, peace, and love, so that out of the overflow of it my mouth speaks only what edifies You!

“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”  ~Ephesians 4:29 (NASB)

Loose Cannon

The tongue holds the power to promote life into the lives of those around you or it can be a loose cannon firing off and producing countless casualties.  Do you want to be responsible for promoting life in people this week or aiming carelessly with loose cannons from your mouth?  We need to learn how to take better responsibility for the words that proceed from our mouths.  May we find wisdom in the Proverbs and let the words transform our hearts.  I pray our understanding may change, so that we can be conformed into God’s likeness alone.

Solomon mentioned the tongue many times in the Proverbs because he knew of its power and warned us of the danger we would face when opening our mouths.  It’s time to heed the principles we see in Proverbs and let the Scripture transform our lives so we will not let loose cannons fly out and harm those we care about.  Here are some of Solomon’s words and ways to apply them in our daily lives:

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)
