Move the Fulcrum

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4, ESV)

In the above passage of scripture we are reminded that trials will come. It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when. Each trial serves a greater purpose in the Lord. God is refining our character and developing the image of His Son in us with every trial we face. We become more Christlike as we lean into God through the difficult times.

Rhythms

To follow Jesus implies that we enter into a way of life that is given character and shape and direction by the one who calls us. To follow Jesus means picking up rhythms and ways of doing things that are often unsaid but always derivative from Jesus, formed by the influence of Jesus. To follow Jesus means that we can’t separate what Jesus is saying from what Jesus is doing and the way that he is doing it. To follow Jesus is as much, or maybe even more, about feet as it is about ears and eyes (The Way of Jesus, Eugene H. Peterson).

Find your Rhythm

Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord [always doing your best and doing more than is needed], being continually aware that your labor [even to the point of exhaustion] in the Lord is not futile nor wasted [it is never without purpose]. (1 Corinthians 15:58, AMP)

We are on Secret #4 for a Joy-Filled Life. If you missed any of the first three secrets you can find them by clicking on the links below…

Secret #1: Maximize your Moments

Secret #2: Keep a Healthy Perspective

Secret #3: Develop a Pattern of Grace

Even as I walked through this last week, the secret of finding my own rhythm came to mind. How much more I enjoy life when I step into the rhythm God has for me. The rhythm He designed for my life. It’s all too easy to step into someone else’s rhythm and get lost in the beat of comparisons. Comparisons are a huge joy killer. Satan knows that. He loves to get us lost in looking at everyone else’s life and lose focus in what God has for us.

Reflecting Back to Move Forward

Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14, AMP)

Another year is coming to a close. I can hardly believe it. Every year I think I will accomplish a little bit more than I actually do. The enemy is good like that. He tries to make you think of everything you didn’t do. He get’s you stuck in yesterday so that you don’t enjoy today and don’t fully live out tomorrow. He’s smart. He knows if he gets us spinning our wheels thinking about the woulda, coulda, and shoulda that our effectiveness for Christ will be lost. The end of the year marks a time of celebration, not a time of condemnation.

Wisdom for Life

Wisdom for life comes in many forms but no one can offer us advice on this subject like God can.  That’s one of the reasons I love the book of Proverbs in the Bible.  It’s filled with rich thoughts on how to live.  It gives direction in a directionally challenged world.  It gives a glimpse of what life can be when we are surrendered to God’s purpose.  It leads us towards God and teaches us how to be more Christlike.

I’m excited to announce that the latest book in the Victorious Living Collection is being released today.  You can find Wisdom for Life anywhere that books are sold.  This was a fun book to put together on the Proverbs.  I wasn’t able to capture every nugget in the Proverbs, but I did do my best to give you at least a snippet.
