“I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes…”
~2 Samuel 6:22 (NIV)
Lately, I’ve been listening to a song over and over again thinking to myself what will it take for me to become “Even More Undignified” or as David put it “I will become even more undignified than this.” The song is Undignified by David Crowder Band and here are some of the lyrics.
Undignified
by: David Crowder Band
I will dance.
I will sing.
To be mad
For my King
Nothing Lord is hindering
This passion in my soul.
(Chorus)
And I’ll become
Even more undignified than this
Some would say it’s foolishness
But I’ll become
Even more undignified than this
These lyrics stand for more than just a song. They stand for a celebration in the Old Testament. In 2 Samuel 6, David and 30 thousand of his men set out to reclaim the Ark of the Covenant and bring it back to Jerusalem. They had accomplished their goal and now were back in their city rejoicing over such a great thing! The Word says,
“David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of the trumpets. As the Ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart…”
When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”
David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel — I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more UNDIGNIFIED than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes…” ~ 2 Samuel 6:14:22 (NIV)
Every time I listen to this song, I imagine dancing through the streets like David and celebrating like he did. He knew God well and was never ashamed to celebrate the awesomeness of His Lord. Have you danced in the streets lately? Have you remembered what God has done for you? Do you celebrate the greatness of God daily? Are you willing to become “even more undignified than this” for God? Sure, we make look foolish to this world, but isn’t worth it for God!
Michal was so wrapped up in herself. She didn’t take the time to celebrate the wonderful thing that was taking place right before her very eyes. Instead of getting out on the street and dancing with her husband in exuberant joy, she decided to mourn because she thought her husband was making a spectacle of himself.
Well, I for one want want to make a spectacle of myself, if it means that somehow my Father will be glorified through me. I want to become “even more undignified than this.” I want to dance in the streets. I want to lose all the things that would try to hold me back. I don’t want to be like Michal and see things from the small little window. I want to be with David, in the streets, praising my Father in Heaven for the continued glorious works that He does in my life!
Let’s choose to go deeper! Let’s dance like we’ve been set free! Let’s run from our broken chains! Let’s find that dignity is not in how proud we become, but in how humble we find ourselves at the feet of the Master!
Dear Father God, I pray that I will be someone who is not afraid to dance before You. May I live completely for You, not holding anything back. I pray my life will be Yours completely. I celebrate every moment that I have on this earth to live, move, and breathe. It’s all for You God, as without You none of it would have any meaning.
I will become “Even More Undignified than this” for You God,
Sarah
