Anchor of Hope

When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, ‘I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.’  And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.

Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…” (Hebrews 6:13-19)

I was reading Hebrews today and some thing struck me about this passage of scripture. God never gives up on us. When He says He will do something, He means it. This shows me a few things about who God is and challenges me to become more like His Son in every way possible. Here is what I have found:

Beware of the Great Destroyer

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

There is nothing subtle about this verse. Jesus exposes the Truth about Satan. The Enemy comes ONLY to steal and kill and destroy us. There it is in plain English. So what do we do? How do we defend ourselves against the Enemy? The first thing we need to do is learn how to recognize our Enemy. We need to take a look at Scripture and find the strategies that Satan uses, so we can fight against them. Let’s take a look at what God’s Word has to say about our Enemy.

1.  He is a Serpent. He comes to steal!

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.  He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ “ (Genesis 3:1)

Satan disguises himself as a serpent in our lives. He slithers in and out of our thoughts with lies that contradict God’s Word. He is sneaky and often strikes when we least expect it. He uses phrases like “what if” and “If only”. Here are some examples from Stormie Omartian’s book “The Power of a Praying Woman”. Read more

Faith

From the tiny birds of the air and from the fragile lilies of the field we learn the same truth, which is so important for those who desire a life of simple faith: God takes care of His own. He knows our needs. He anticipates our crises. He is moved by our weaknesses. He stands ready to come to our rescue. And at just the right moment He steps in and proves Himself as our faithful heavenly Father. (Charles Swindoll)

The Earth is Mine

Then God said, “Let us make man in our own image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)

Yes, I’m sure you have heard this verse before and many times at that.  But maybe it’s time to go back to the beginning.  The place where there was no sin.  A place where only God and man existed.  A place where man was able to enjoy sweet fellowship with God and not have any interruptions.  A place where there were no excuses, no cell phones, no business meetings, no traffic, no illness, no financial strain, no loss of jobs, no house payment due, no one to distract you from simply remembering that the Creator made you in His image.

WOW!  That very thought amazes me!  God did not have to make us in His image.  His image is so beautiful and so indescribable.  Why would He create me to mirror His image?  There is only one answer to that.  He created me to glorify Him.  Everything He did, He did well!

No One Like Our God

Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.

Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD.

Psalm 150
