Worry Free in Jesus

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat;  or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and you Father knows that you need them. (Luke 12:22-30)

I love how Jesus can go from a story about a Rich Fool to this passage above.  He goes from someone who has everything to someone who is worrying about their next meal.  He stops us in our tracks and reminds us to look around.  We need to see how God is providing for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field.  The bird mentioned above is the raven.  The raven was considered an unclean bird and therefore had little value to the people of that day.  Jesus wanted to assure us that God cared for something that was even unworthy of his care.  God cared for a little raven, an unclean bird.  A bird that had no ability to store up it’s own food.  It was fully dependent on God.  If God cares this much for a little bird, how much more does He care for us and will He provide for us?

The passage of Scripture goes into a question, “Who can add a single hour to his life by worrying?”  Have you ever gained time by worrying about tomorrow?  Or have you lost time by looking to your future and forgetting to enjoy the present?  It’s time to stop borrowing trouble!  Let’s hand our worries over to God.  Let’s find out what He can do when our lives are fully surrendered to Him.

The next part of the passage talks about the lilies of the field.  It’s almost like Jesus is walking through a field.  He’s seen the ravens and used them in His demonstration.  Now He sees the lilies.  All of creation declares God’s glory, if we look close enough.  God reminds us that even the lilies of the field have been provided for.  What did they do to cause this?  Nothing!  Yet, God considers them even more beautiful than Solomon dressed in all his splendor.  The lilies are here today and gone tomorrow, but God cares for them.  How much more does He care for us and how much more will He provide for us?

“But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” (Luke 12:31)

“For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34)

Dear Father God, You know the things that are on my heart.  The things that cause me pain.  The things that cause me to fret.  I lift them up to You right now, right here.  I pray that You will make things right in my life.  That you will set things straight.  I know I can depend on You.  I do not have to worry about tomorrow because You have said You will take care of it.  I trust You with my whole life.  I trust Your plans for me and all Your promises!  May You continue Your good work inside of me!  Thank You Lord!
