God is All Holy

If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. (Psalm 139:19-20

David is so passionate about the things of God that he declares that even God’s enemies are his enemies.  He wants nothing to do with those who stand against God or use His name in vain.  He wants to align himself with people who take seriously who God is and give reverence to His name.  David was simply pledging his loyalty to the Lord.  He knew how awesome God was and he couldn’t bear the thought of someone misusing, misrepresenting, or mishandling the name of God.

Do you treat God like He is All-Holy?  Do you have reverence for His name?  Do you cringe when someone misuses the name of the Lord? Read more

God is Omnipotent

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13)

I love the poetic words of David.  He did not have the fancy things that we have now a days, yet he was mesmerized by the work of God.  He knew that God created his inner heart, emotions, organs, desires, and unique talents.  He saw God as the Great Designer of his life.  “God knit him like a skilled artisan would weave a beautiful tapestry (Holman’s Commentary).”  This same God knit the very fiber of your being.  He placed in you unique talents and abilities.  He gave you your smile.  He made that precious heart of yours pump and provide oxygen to the rest of your body.  He designed you and loved you enough to make you special.  He has great things in store for you!

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)

God is Omnipresent

Let’s take a look at Psalm 139:7-12 today.  This part of the Psalm is declaring that God is omnipresent.  He has the ability to be everywhere all at the time!  There is simply nowhere to run from God.  Let’s take a look at David’s thoughts on this and hear his heart towards God.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? (Psalm 139:7)

David asks a rhetorical question of God.  He knows the answer, but he still asks.  God can handle your questions.  He can handle your doubts.  He can handle your fears.  Simply come to Him and ask Him what you may.  Just make sure to brace yourself for His answer.

God is Omniscient

Psalm 139:1-6 declares the omniscience of God.  Do you know that God is deeply familiar with all your ways?  He knows you!  He loves you!  He has set you aside for a purpose!  Let’s walk through Psalm 139:1-6 and see just how familiar God is with all our ways!

O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.  (Psalm 139:1)

1.  God Knows You

Nothing in your life is hidden from God.  In fact, the word “searched” in verse 1 means, “to explore, to spy out, and to dig deeply into.”  God sees what no one else can see!  He sees the very depths of your being.  I can’t imagine what He sees at the depth of my being.  It leaves me in awe that He sees all the yuckiness of my heart and still continues to love me. Let’s take a look at why Psalm 139 was written and tomorrow we will begin our study verse by verse through it!

1.  What is the theme?

The Psalmist is meditating on four of the most incredible attributes of God.  He is taking time to celebrate who God is.  God is all-knowing (Omniscient), God is all-present (Omnipresent), God is all-powerful (Omnipotent), and God is all-holy.
