Weight of our Sins

cropped-img_02991.jpg

This week leading up to Easter I would like to share some devotionals with you from my new book Praying through the Gospels.  I have included some links at the end of the devotion, if you would like to order the book.  Praying through the Gospels is pretty simple.  It’s just a small reflection in prayer on different aspects from the Gospels and what Jesus did for us.  Hope you enjoy this week of devotionals!

 Overwhelmed

Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.

Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Matthew 26:38

Lord, I can’t begin to imagine how overwhelming the thought of the cross, the separation from the Father, and the weight of our sins were. Lord, thank you for not giving in to how you felt that day. Thank you for moving forward even when the weight of the world was on your shoulders.

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed,

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.

Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Matthew 26:39

Lord, may I follow your lead. May this be my prayer as I daily surrender myself to the work of your hands. May I not seek to have my will accomplished, but may I seek to
accomplish your will!

And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly,

and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Luke 22:44

Lord, I cannot fully imagine the anguish you faced.  Lord, please help me to never forget what you felt and how you moved on from there. Please help me to not give in to
the moments in my life when I feel blah. May I press in as you pressed in and seek to fulfill my father’s purpose, even when it hurts.

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate;
when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted
himself to him who judges justly.
1 Peter 2:23

Jesus is Risen

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.  Come and see the place where he lay.  (Matthew 28:5-6)

Lord, the greatest three words ever written in history are, “He is risen!”  It’s because of these three words that I can now experience life.  I have victory over death because You took on the grave for me.  You faced death for me and conquered it!  My sin held me captive.  My life was headed no where.  But You stepped in and saved me.

Jesus, Son of God

If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. (1 John 4:15-16)

Jesus is the Answer

Where do I go for my sustenance?

I go to the Bread of Life.

Where do I find comfort?

I find comfort in my Wonderful Counselor.

What do I lean on when life is uncertain?

I lean on the Chief Cornerstone.

How can I be fruitful for God?

I will stay attached to the True Vine.

Experiencing Jesus

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)

This devotional is part 2 from yesterday.  Here is a link to the first part, if you missed it What about the Nails?

Do you know that Scripture never says if Thomas was able to touch the hands of the Savior or touch His side?  It was enough for him to hear the voice of his Savior and see the One who taught him how to truly live!  Yes, those scars are there and Jesus was willing to show them.  Maybe it was never about the scars.  Maybe it was about something more.  I believe Thomas wanted to see his Savior again.  The One who led him for three years.  The One who taught him so much.  Let’s follow the exchange between Jesus and Thomas, maybe we can learn a little more.

“A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.” (John 20:26)
