Redefining Success
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)
A few weeks ago when I received the news that I would have a book signing at LifeWay, I thought wow now I feel like I’m an author. It was a beautiful place thinking that God was rewarding my efforts for writing. I walked around thanking God all day. But in one moment, one moment with my son. One precious moment when he wrapped his little arm around me, which is what he is doing in this picture… in that moment that was true success!
Nothing that I have done writing wise has ever compared to the success I feel just loving my little boy. Those moments where he loves me back and I watch him learn something new. Every moment with my son is successful! Often I have to slow down to enjoy those moments. I have to put the phone down, not look at Facebook, reply to emails late, leave the dishes in the sink, deal with some unkept rooms, follow my son as he reaches out with his hand to take me somewhere to see something new, and just slow down to enjoy the moment with him.
This world measures success by what they can see from your life! God measures success by who you are in life. The measure of success in my home looks different. I may never write a New York Best Seller’s, I may never sell millions of books, or take on a book tour. But none of those things define success for me. Success is in the moment I stop to look at my son and appreciate what God has given me. Success is the freedom to slow down and embrace what the day has for me. Success is cherishing the moments I’ve been given.
I’m redefining success for my life. I choose to believe that the greatest success I can experience is in God alone. Nothing compares to following Him, living for Him, being surrendered to His purpose, and loving the children He gives me. This is success! I’m successful because I stop to enjoy and appreciate all that God has given me.
Lord, please help me to redefine what success is for my life. Please help me to live outside of the box that the world has created on success and live to be successful in You alone! I choose to look to You and find success in the sweet moments of all that I have been given.
Great Success is in the Lord,
