…Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.  You believe that there is only one God.  Good!  Even the demons believe that–and shudder. (James 2:18-19)

There is a controversy that is taking place about what is more important:  faith or deeds?  One person may think they have it altogether because their faith is as strong as a cement wall.  Then you have the next person who thinks they have it altogether because the things they do for others are too numerous to count.  The author of this passage wants us to realize that faith and deeds belong together.  I must live by faith daily and in that faith I take action to lead a life of serving God.  In my service to God, I find many deeds to do along the way.  None of these deeds are to be recognized in and of themselves because they are nothing without my faith.  Let’s start at the beginning!

“…Show me your faith without deeds…”

The controversy has come to a culmination at this point in the passage.  It’s time to decide what your faith means to you.  Is it just another word in your Christian vocabulary or is it a word you stand behind?  God is looking for people who stand strong in their faith.  I believe it’s impossible to have a strong faith in God without desiring to help those who are in need.  How can I sit around and talk about faith without putting what it means into action?  I can redefine the word many times over, but until I act it out, that’s all it is… just a word!

“…and I will show you my faith by what I do.”

Are you willing to show others what your life in God means to you?  How do your actions display the glory of God?  Do people see your faith in God through your deeds?  There are many places to hide and many insecurities to hide behind.  But this is no time to hide your faith in God.  When will you step up to the plate for the One who deserves every Home Run you can hit?

“You believe that there is only one God.  Good!”

Take caution here.  Many believe that there is one god, some higher power, an intelligent being, etc.  You need to stand out from everyone else.  How are you going to do it?  You’ll never do it by swimming with all the other fish.  Yes, it’s great if you believe in the One, True, Living God who sent His Son Jesus Christ.  But there is still more work to be done.  You need to live your life in a way that exhibits this belief system.  God wants you to show others that you belong to His family.  Help people understand that Jesus is the only way to Heaven.  Don’t act like you serve a mamby pamby God.  You serve a victorious, amazing, unchanging, LIVING God.  It’s time to act like it!  May the world start looking at you and ask themselves, “what was in your coffee this morning?”  You can respond, “Oh, some Jesus pizzazz with two spoonfuls of God’s grace.”  Go out and live your life in faith ready to do whatever you can for the glory of God.

“Even the demons believe that–and shudder.”

Yes, the demons know God exists.  There is no hiding that.  God’s existence is very well known.  Don’t be afraid to send the enemy packing because God is bigger than the enemy.  If the demons shudder, than how much more should we act out our faith for the very existence of God that we believe in.  We are on the side that’s winning.  We are the one’s in victory because of what Jesus did on Calvary’s Hill.  Let’s make the demons squirm even more!  Live your life out in a way that glorifies God with your words, actions, deeds, and daily activity.  You are a living reflection of your Father above.

Dear Father God, I pray that my faith will be accompanied by deeds.  May I have a strong testimony in the way I live for You and may I never waiver in the opportunities I have to share who You are with others.

Living Big for Jesus,
