Home Run Hitter
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24)
I watched a great movie the other night that taught me a good lesson from the Lord. It’s called “Moneyball”. Now there are some things in it that I don’t agree with, but for the most part this is a great movie with a message that can really challenge you, if you let it. I’m not going to share all the lessons I got from the movie because that would be enough to fill a book. Instead, I’m going to focus on the main lesson.
The theme throughout the movie was “To get on base”. The General Manager was putting together a winning Baseball team by looking at the stats of those who most often got on base. The goal was to create a team with the highest average on base.
There is a short clip that the General Manager and his assistant watch. The assistant shows the GM a clip of a baseball player who rarely takes the opportunity to go to second. This man is a little gun shy and just happy to get to first base. He never takes a chance for second, but this one time in his career… he decided he was going to go for it. Unfortunately, he slipped and fell. He scrambled to touch first base. Little did he know, that he had hit a home run. The ball went 60 feet beyond the fence. He had no idea that he had scored a home run. He was content to just get on base.
There are two things that I grab from this. One, we can’t score a home run, if we never hit the ball. And two, we often become content with just getting on base. We forget that God can do so much more! We can score home runs with the Lord! You don’t have to have a PHD. You don’t have to have the whole Bible memorized. You don’t have to be perfect! You can score a home run, just by getting in the game. You have to want to get on base, but then God can take you any where.
Are you running in such a way to win the prize? Do you realize that God has given you everything you need to win the prize? He has given you the ability to hit a home run! Will you start harnessing this ability and hit a few runs for the Lord? Will you decide not to be content with just a base hit? Let’s score a few for the Lord! Let’s up our game and become winners for Christ!

Dear Father God, I know it’s easy to become content. Happy to just get on base! But I want more, I want the home runs! I want to hit the ball with strength and determination. I want to know that I can run in such a way to win the prize that you have for me. I want to run with eternity in sight. May I never be satisfied with just a base hit!
I want to be a Home Run Hitter,
