Steps of Wisdom

By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew. (Proverbs 3:19-20)

I absolutely love this above passage.  It portrays a depth of God that we will never fully comprehend.  It’s saying that God used wisdom to lay the foundations of the earth.  He did not merely lay them down.  He didn’t just say let the water be here and the grass here and the sky here and oh while I’m at it, let me create some animals and maybe some human beings.  No, he thought through what He was doing.  He knew beforehand every single tree He would create, every animal, every fish of the sea, every fruit, every thing that we see, God took time to think through His creation.  It wasn’t happenstance!  God cared so much about us before we were even here that He took His time placing what we would enjoy on this earth.  That’s truly amazing!  I’ll never be able to comprehend that!  Especially when I tend to take it for granted more often than not.

Pearls of Wisdom

Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.  Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.  I am a stranger in the earth:  hide not thy commandments from me.  My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times. (Psalm 119:17-20, KJV)

What are the wonderful things we can receive by following God’s law?

First, of all remember there is freedom when we live within God’s law.  He created it as a loving father creates rules for a son or daughter.  They do so to keep their children from danger.  The Word of God has been given to us to help us see how best to live our lives for God.

Glean Wisdom

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)

Can you relate to this passage of Scripture?  Have you ever had someone look down on you for any reason?  Maybe you can identify with Timothy.  I know that I have looked at this passage many times in my life and have gathered wisdom each time. Let’s glean (gather) the wisdom from this passage of Scripture.

Glean Wisdom

1.  Paul wrote directly to Timothy.  He did not address the people who considered Timothy to be young.  He went to Timothy and helped Timothy understand that strong character cannot be destroyed by other’s interpretation.  No one can destroy who you are by what they think of you.  Your character is determined by who you are in God and the dependence you place on God.  Who are you depending on for the development of your character?

Soul Food

I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word. I recounted my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees. Let me understand the teaching of your precepts; then I will meditate on your wonders. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. (Psalm 119:25-28)

vs. 25 “…preserve my life according to your word.”

What are we in life, if we do not have the Word to guide us?  Where will we go with our questions?  Who will bear our burdens? Without the Word we do not even know where our lives began, where they are going, or where they will end.  Our souls are but dust on this earth without the breath of God breathing life into us.  With Him and His Word we truly have meaning and purpose. The New Living Translation says “…revive me by your word.”

Hunger Pains

God, teach me lessons for living so I can stay the course.  Give me insight so I can do what you tell me—my whole life long, obedient response.  Guide me down the road of your commandments; I love traveling this freeway!

Give me a bent for your words of wisdom, and not for piling up loot.  Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets, invigorate me on the pilgrim way.  Affirm your promises to me—promises made to all who fear you.  Deflect the harsh words of my critics—but what you say is always so good.  See how hungry I am for your counsel; preserve my life through your righteous ways! (Psalm 119:33-40, MSG)

vs. 33 “God, Teach me lessons for learning…”

David shows us here that you never stop learning.  He was asking God to teach him more so that He would be able to stay on course for God.  May we stay pliable and willing to learn whatever God may want to teach us.  May we never come to think we have achieved enough or know enough, but may we always be willing to learn more from God.  He is full of wisdom for our lives.
