Solomon’s Credentials

Have you ever wanted to sit down with the wisest man who ever lived?  Have you ever just longed to glean from the wisdom of those who have gone before us?  Do you sometimes long for wisdom in new and unknown territories of life?  I know I have!  So with that in mind, let’s sit down for coffee with Solomon.  Let’s take a look at his writings in the Proverbs and glean from the wisdom that God gave him.  I know if any of you are like me, you tend to want to know who someone is before you decide to go have coffee with them.  So let me give you some insight into Solomon’s life.  Let’s take a look at his credentials and find out why we can glean from his wisdom!

Solomon is the author of most of the Proverbs.  He also wrote Psalm 72 and 127, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.  Solomon was the ruler of Israel from 971-931 B.C.  In 1 Kings 3 we find out how Solomon became the wisest man to walk the earth.  It is here we read that God came to Solomon in a dream and asked this question, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you (1 Kings 3:5).”  Solomon’s answer  was this, “So give your servant a discerning heart to go govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong… (1 Kings 3:9).”  God’s answer to this is quite amazing!

Asking for Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5, AMP)

I don’t know about you but I know that I’m lacking wisdom.  I know that this verse was written for me.  So I’m going to spend a month asking God to increase my wisdom.  I want to spend the month of August in the Proverbs and find wisdom through God’s Word.  Will you journey with me through the Proverbs?  Will you come with me to find the wisdom in God’s Word?  Will you admit that your lacking wisdom?  Let’s go to God together and seek the wisdom that only He can give.

Sharpened by the Word

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)

I’m wondering how you are doing on taking the challenge to memorize the Word of God.  Maybe some of you are wondering why it’s so important!  Maybe some of you wonder why you should take time to commit Scripture to memory.  Well, I want to dive in to Scripture to show you how powerful the Word of God can be in your life.

The above verse tells us that the Word of God is a lamp to our feet and light to our path.  God’s Word lights our path.  It gives us guidance and direction.  It teaches us how to walk uprightly and how to align our thoughts with God’s thinking.  We are constantly being bombarded by this world’s standards.  There is only one way to fight back and that is through the Word of God.

“For the word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
