Overcoming the Darkness

Darkness is the reality for many

It appears that at some point in our lives, we have all had an encounter with it. Whether it was something spoken over us or lies we chose to believe.

Whether it was the result of circumstances we had no control of in our lives or the consequences faced from a personal decision we chose to make. Regardless of the reality, the enemy wants to keep us trapped inside that dark place.

Overcoming that darkness doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey. One moment at a time, one choice at a time, and one step at a time. It’s the light of truth being shed onto that dark place that makes the way of escape.

God showed us in the book of Genesis that this was the first part of the process. The very first thing God addressed was the darkness. He said “let there be light”. Only with the light of truth shown, can we see what exists inside the darkness. Then, just as God did, we too can begin to address one adversity at a time.

Overcoming the Darkness is Our Mission

Our theme for the year is to bring hope to overcoming the darkness as a whole. From this point onward, we will begin to address each adversity, one at a time and shine the light of truth on each and every lie that darkness has told.

Our hope is that each resource will help you become one step closer. Through each story, each encounter, and each moment, you will be encouraged and that you will find healing. That you will learn the truth of who you are and who you were always meant to be.

This is just the beginning of our journey, our first step on the path.

Beware of the Great Destroyer

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

There is nothing subtle about this verse. Jesus exposes the Truth about Satan. The Enemy comes ONLY to steal and kill and destroy us. There it is in plain English. So what do we do? How do we defend ourselves against the Enemy? The first thing we need to do is learn how to recognize our Enemy. We need to take a look at Scripture and find the strategies that Satan uses, so we can fight against them. Let’s take a look at what God’s Word has to say about our Enemy.

1.  He is a Serpent. He comes to steal!

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.  He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ “ (Genesis 3:1)

Satan disguises himself as a serpent in our lives. He slithers in and out of our thoughts with lies that contradict God’s Word. He is sneaky and often strikes when we least expect it. He uses phrases like “what if” and “If only”. Here are some examples from Stormie Omartian’s book “The Power of a Praying Woman”. Read more

Claiming Victory in Jesus

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

The above passage of Scripture is one of my absolute favorites. It reminds me that though I live in this world, I don’t have to fight like them. In fact, if I fight with the same weapons the world uses I will fail in extraordinary fashion. But if I choose to take up the armor of God and fight in the strength of who the Lord is I will gain the victory.

The battles I face on a daily basis are spiritual battles. They can’t be won in my strength, they can only be won in the strength of the Lord.

Beware of the Enemy

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. (John 10:10, AMP)

This week I want to encourage you to beware of the Enemy’s plans. He is constantly looking for a way to destroy you and I. We must be grounded in God’s Word. Daily feeding on God’s Truth. We must remember that our fight is not against flesh and blood but against something much bigger.

Emergency Exit Plan

…we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Every time I fly, the flight attendants share what the plan is for an emergency landing.  I know it by heart and I’m sure many of you do too.  I know where the flotation devices are, I know where the exits are, I know the oxygen mask will come down from the ceiling, I know to place it on myself before others, I know the emergency lights will light up on the floor, and I know to put my head in my lap to prepare for the landing.  Well, what would happen if we had an emergency exit plan in place when the Enemy comes to attack?  The fact is I think we would live a much more effective life for Christ, if we had a strategy in place.
