Move the Fulcrum

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4, ESV)

In the above passage of scripture we are reminded that trials will come. It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when. Each trial serves a greater purpose in the Lord. God is refining our character and developing the image of His Son in us with every trial we face. We become more Christlike as we lean into God through the difficult times.

Find your Rhythm

Even as I walked through this last week, the secret of finding my own rhythm came to mind. How much more I enjoy life when I step into the rhythm God has for me. The rhythm He designed for my life. It’s all too easy to step into someone else’s rhythm and get lost in the beat of comparisons. Comparisons are a huge joy killer. Satan knows that. He loves to get us lost in looking at everyone else’s life and lose focus in what God has for us.

Develop a Pattern of Grace

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

I don’t know about you but I tend to show myself very little grace. I can accept the grace that God gives me but showing myself grace is a whole other story. No one can possibly be harder on me than I am on myself. I want to get things right the first time. I want to get control of this ugly, sinful nature that resides in me. I want so badly to live fully abandoned to Christ, but daily struggles get in the way.

Keep a Healthy Perspective

Let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)

I am enjoying this 7 week series of learning how to live a joy-filled life with you. I would love to hear how you took time to maximize your moments last week. This week, I want to share my second secret to a joy-filled life. A joy-filled life is only possible when we keep a healthy perspective. This morning, as I went to work to clean out the dishwasher once again and unload the clean dishes I was faced with a choice. I could grumble and complain that here I am once again taking care of these dishes. The pile of dishes is unending and as long as people eat in my house (which I’m pretty sure with three boys in the house, that will not end soon) I need to remind myself how blessed we are. Those dishes remind me that God has provided for our family. We have not gone without a meal. My boys have never had to wonder if their little tummies will be filled.

Maximize your Moments

Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

For the next seven weeks we will be unpacking what it means to live a joy-filled life. I will reveal one secret at a time that I have found helps in the journey of joy. Please let me know your secrets for living a joy-filled life. I would love to hear them.

The first secret I would like to reveal for a joy-filled life is that we must learn how to maximize our moments. Jim Elliott once said, “Wherever you are be all there.” We live in a world where our attention is constantly divided. Our minds are racing with a thousand things to get done. Often we will be thinking about the next moment before we finish the moment we are in.
