Gaze Forward and Only Glance Back

Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14, AMP)

We are doing a study on running the race, as we study Philippians 3:12-14. If you would like to read the first devotional in this series, you can click here and you can find the second one by clicking here.

The first essential needed for running the race is a dissatisfaction with your current walk. A desire to want more and strive for more in Christ. The second essential for running the race is Devotion. We must simplify our devotion and dedicate our lives to a Kingdom purpose!

This week we will talk about the third essential needed for running the race.

I want to talk a little bit about the second essential needed for running the race. The first essential I shared came out last week and we talked about how important it is to not get satisfied in our walks with the Lord. We will never truly run in this race until we are dissatisfied with our current position in it. The next essential for running the race is DEVOTION.

Eyes on the Prize

Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14, AMP)

I want to take the next four weeks to share with you four essentials for running the Christian race. We will cover the above verse bit by bit as we study what it looks like to run the race that God has before us. Today, we will talk about the first part.

1st Essential ~ DISSATISFACTION

“Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet…”

God’s Beautiful Design

He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11, AMP)

A few months ago my husband and I were able to get away for a couple nights to Niagara Falls. It was so beautiful. One of those places that leaves you in awe of God’s majesty. It was truly incredible! While there, we visited a butterfly conservatory. This place left me in awe of God’s design.

God has a beautiful design on each one of our lives. No detail is left out. As we entered the conservatory, I had no idea what I was in for. We stepped into a haven of beauty, I was in awe once again. But this was a different kind of awe. I looked at the details of each butterfly truly amazed by God’s design. Every detail, every color, every dot, and every line on every beautiful butterfly left me amazed.
