Tongue Jesus God Devotional

Biting My Tongue

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)

First of all, I have to admit that I’ve read this verse many times before and never been struck so deeply by the meaning of it in my own life!  Words!  We all use them, but there are definitely times we would like to give ownership of some of them to another.  The ones that sneak out at times when we act unaware, times when our tongue is slippery and sharp.  It cuts quickly and smooth.

Unfortunately, many words spoken do bring sin and we are unable to take them back.  The greatest truth in this passage is “he who holds his tongue is wise”.  Could it be that simple?  When a word is not spoken, there is no need to retrace our steps.  No need for forgiveness.  No need for bitterness to grow in another heart.

Lord, I ask that you may bridle my tongue.  Keep me from saying things that would harm another.  May the words on my mouth be full of joy, peace, love, and hope.  May Your very breath be what is poured out from my lips.  Help me to speak as You would have me speak dear Lord! May my silence be wisdom attained from the goodness of your heart!

Surrendering my mouth to You,
